A nurse's paycheck is rarely just "hours times rate." Between night differentials, weekend premiums, holiday pay, charge-nurse bumps, on-call, and overtime, a single two-week period can contain half a dozen different pay rates layered on top of each other. That complexity is exactly where errors hide.
What a shift differential is
A shift differential is extra pay for working less desirable hoursâ€â€ÂÂnights, evenings, weekends. It's usually expressed as either a flat amount per hour or a percentage on top of your base rate. Because it only applies to specific hours, your effective pay rate can change in the middle of a shift that crosses from evening into night.
Why the layering gets complicated
Here's where it adds up: a weekend night shift might earn a base rate, plus a night differential, plus a weekend premiumâ€â€ÂÂand if it pushes you into overtime, the overtime calculation may need to account for those differentials too. Miss one layer and the paycheck quietly understates what you earned. Multiply that across a year of varied shifts and the gap can be real.
On-call is its own puzzle
Call pay often works differently from worked hoursâ€â€ÂÂa lower rate for being available, a higher rate if you're actually called in, sometimes with a guaranteed minimum. Knowing how your facility handles it is the only way to confirm you were paid correctly for a week with call built in.
Track it shift by shift
The reliable way to catch a discrepancy is to log each shift as you work it: the date, the hours, which differentials applied, and whether it was call or overtime. Then your own record becomes the thing you check the paycheck againstâ€â€ÂÂnot your memory of a blur of twelves.
Keep your rights handy too
Staffing rules, mandatory-overtime limits, and break protections vary widely and matter enormously in nursing. Having a plain-English reference to them, alongside your hours, means you're preparedâ€â€ÂÂwhether the issue is a paycheck that's short or a shift that crossed a line.
